Tottenham boss Conte insists VAR is damaging football

Updated: Oct 30, 2022

The Italian boss Conte was sent off as his side's late winning goal against Sporting was ruled out due to an inexplicable VAR decision.

Rodrigo Bentancur's 80th-minute equaliser saw Spurs avoid a third successive defeat in all competitions

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte believes 'VAR is doing a lot of damage' in football after the Lilywhites were denied a winning goal against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the Champions League.

Spurs thought they had secured three points on Wednesday night - which would have been a vital win in their hopes to secure a spot in the next round of Europe's elite competition - when Harry Kane's close-range effort hit the net in the closing seconds.

But, a perennial VAR call saw the goal ruled out for offside - a decision that sent Italian boss Conte wild at the touchline and eventually led him to be sent off by the referee, Danny Makkelie.

Spurs knew going into the match against Sporting that a win would be enough to secure their place in the last-16 of the competition in order to prevent the need for a winner-takes-all Group D showdown with Marseille on the final matchday next week.

Though, the hosts did not start the game well as academy graduate Marcus Edwards broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. However, Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur equalised with just ten minutes left to play, and from then on, Spurs huffed and puffed, mounting pressure on the awayside.

Then the moment came when the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was sent into ecstasy as Kane latched onto Brazil defender Emerson Royal's knockdown, firing the ball into the far corner.

Moments later, it all went from ecstasy to despair for the Tottenham fans when VAR intervened, and after a long wait, the decision was to cancel the goal because Emerson was deemed offside.

'A lot of injustice.'

Speaking to BT Sport after both sides played out a 1-1 draw in north London, Conte said: "I think the ball was in front of Kane, and the goal is a goal. Yeah. I don’t understand the line they put. It very difficult to comment on this decision.

"VAR is doing a lot of damage. I want to see if in another stadium of a big team if they are ready to disallow this type of goal. I’d like to know this.

"A lot of injustice. I don’t like this type of situation. I do not see positive things.

"The second half was positive, and we played with great intensity. We deserved to win, but we know what happened.

"I don’t understand why we have to get something from the next game when we can finish the qualification in this game. When you invent this type of situation, you create a lot of damage to the club. Also, problems."
