Van Gaal admits West Brom defeat is a big blow in their bid for top four finish.

Louis van Gaal Post Match Interview - Big Blow To Top Four Chances.

Louis van Gaal has admitted that Manchester United's hopes for a top-four spot in the Premier League has suffered a major blow after West Bromwich Albion thrashed his side 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

The Red Devils went down to 10 men early on in the game when Juan Mata was dismissed for two bookable offences, as United struggled to hit the target for the rest of the game.

Salomon Rondon scored the winning goal for the Baggies in the 66th minute when he calmly finished off Sebastien Pocognoli’s cross, making it their first win over United in 32 years at The Hawthorns.

"It’s a big blow because I’ve said we have to win these kinds of matches, especially when you have lost already so many," said Van Gaal after the loss.

"We have to close the gap, but we are not closing the gap.

"And that’s a big pity."

Man United are two points behind fifth-placed West Ham and three behind their noisy neighbours Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
