Manchester United’s 10 game unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end after Ronald Koeman’s Southampton gatecrashed their party at Old Trafford and Louis van Gaal would be really disappointed to see his side drop points at home.
It was a battle for the third place in the Premier League and the Saints showed that they are up for a fight as Tadic scored the winner after coming on as a substitute. United were lethargic and the decision to drop Radamel Falcao from the squad looked really bizarre at the end of the game as they lacked creativity and the Saint’s defence stood strong under relatively little pressure from the home side.
When asked if Falcao was left out against Southampton because he was injured, Van Gaal said: “No. We have now many players who are coming back. He has played the last three matches in a row. I have to compare players with each other. He was out of the 18 but that is this moment, next week is another moment.”
Louis van Gaal was reminded in his press conference that David Moyes had the same number of points at this stage last season and that really seemed to irk him.
“So you have waited on the moment you can put this to me this season,” the Dutchman added.
“All the weeks, you have waited to put this season. The moment I have same points as David Moyes. I didn’t make it better.”
“That is what I am always saying, we have to be better, we have to improve. That is why we are working very hard. All the training sessions, all the meetings, we are working at that.”
It was the first time at Arsenal since May 2009 against Arsenal that a United team had failed to manage even a single shot on target and Van Gaal praised Southampton’s defensive organisation as his side were restricted to very few chances.
“We were the dominating team but you have to create more chances when you are the dominating team. We didn’t choose the right solutions in the third and fourth phase but that is also because Southampton defended in a very small space and very well organised.”
“They came for a draw and they got away with a victory. That is a little bit of luck and unlucky.
“Then we change the play style and after that I think we have created three open chances. That is more or less the same match as we did in Southampton so when you ask if it is fair, may you take into account the match there.”
