The Red Devils boss wasn’t happy his side didn’t secure the win at Villa Park despite Aston Villa going down to 10 men with 25 minutes to go.
Louis van Gaal felt they were the better side and had lots of possession on the ball but couldn’t secure three points as they ended the game 1-1, dropping two points which was clearly frustrating.
“When you are the better team you have to win,” the United boss told MUTV. “We have had a lack of aggression in the first half, I think at that time we were much better. We kept the ball very well but didn’t do too much with it. We didn’t create many chances in the first half."
The Dutchman felt his side weren’t aggressive enough and said Aston Villa had a good game as well.
“Because of the lack of aggression we were losing 1-0 and then we changed that attitude in the second half," Van Gaal added. "We did everything to win but it is very difficult. I have to say that Aston Villa did very well also.”
Van Gaal started the match with Carrick in defence but moved the England international to midfield in the second half which clearly was a better choice as Carrick had a better impact in the game.
“With Carrick you have more passes to the strikers and that was needed which is why I changed Darren [Fletcher] for [Tyler Blackett] and put Michael in midfield, but I could have changed a lot of players because I think that it is the first demand that we are aggressive.”
