Raphael Varane has revealed he turned down a move to Old Trafford because Manchester United signed Phil Jones.
The Los Blancos defender has been one of the highly-rated young defenders in Europe and Manchester United were amongst those who wanted the Frenchman at their club.
The 21-year-old defender moved from Lens to Real Madrid back in 2011 just after the Reds signed Phil Jones from Blackburn.
And Varane told L'Equipe: "Manchester United? They had just signed Phil Jones in my position."
He also said how he turned down a move to Paris Saint-Germain after Jose Mourinho helped lure him to Madrid.
"The project [at PSG] wasn't clear. The Qataris had only just arrived and it was all very vague," added Varane.
"My first reaction when Real wanted to sign me was not, 'Of course I will go'. I only made my decision when I knew that the coach wanted me to play in the first team."
