Villa 2-1 Bournemouth: Lambert delighted with FA Cup progress.

The Villa boss Paul Lambert said his team deserved to win their FA Cup fourth round tie against Bournemouth at Villa Park.

Aston Villa secured a 2-1 win over the Cherries on Sunday, thanks to goals by Carles Gil and Andreas Weimann. Callum Wilson pulled one back in the dying minute for the away side but a comeback wasn’t possible.

However, Lambert was pleased with the performance of his players as they saw off the Championship side and also praised both efforts from Gil and Weimann.

"I am delighted to go through," said the Villa boss as Avfc.co.uk reported. "I thought we deserved it. I thought we were fantastic.

"They were two unbelievable goals - the first one was world-class. Carles is a real talent.

"And Andi's goal, with the timing and movement, was excellent.

"In the second half we were a lot better. I thought we dominated the game. We looked lively.

"Bournemouth are a good side but we were very good in the second half,” Lambert continued.

"I thought the middle of the pitch was too congested in the first half. We changed it at half-time and played a different system.

"I thought it worked great for us. Bournemouth came and put five in the middle. They normally don't do that. There was not much space so that's why I changed it at half-time.

"I put Carles wider and it stretched the game. We looked really good in the second half.

"The lads have had a hard time and been criticised a lot but I thought they deserved a lot of credit for the way they played today. I thought they were excellent.

"They were playing against a team who have been winning a lot of games."
