Wenger Fears Gareth Southgate Resigned Too Quickly After Euro 2024 Final Loss

Arsene Wenger Questions Southgate's Quick Resignation After Euro 2024 Final Defeat

Arsene Wenger voiced concern that Gareth Southgate may have made a hasty decision to resign as England manager following their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Wenger, who briefly spoke with Southgate after the match, regretted not advising him to take more time to reflect before stepping down.

He praised Southgate for his excellent work with the England team, bringing them close to victory, and suggested that his successor should be someone with experience and strong credibility.

While speaking at the Olympic Gala Of Champions at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, Wenger said: 'I saw him just after the final and I forgot to tell him, "don't make a quick decision", because when you lose such a big final, you always think in the next 48 hours you will resign.

'So that's the only regret I have. But after that, you have to sign a competent guy who can continue to do the job he did.'

Asked who should be Southgate's successor, the 74-year-old said: 'Well, this team is like a hundred-meter runner who is one yard away from winning it. Overall, what you want is for them to gain the last yard. Maybe somebody with experience, and good creditability with the players.

'The England squad are very close to winning. They have the qualities, so you have to support them for the next World Cup.

'It's coming very soon and overall, I must say Southgate did a great job and he has built a team that confidence again, quality.'
