Maresca Confirmed Mixed News on Fofana and Tosin Fitness After Palace Stalemate
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca provided an update on defenders Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana following the goalless draw with Crystal Palace, offering supporters a clearer picture of the players' progress in their recoveries.
Fofana, who has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines, edged closer to making his competitive return.
The Frenchman, so influential when available last season, was back among the substitutes at Stamford Bridge. Although he remained unused on Sunday afternoon, his inclusion was seen as an important milestone.
“Wes was on the bench but was just on the bench to be with us, and the plan was for him not to get any minutes,” Maresca explained post-match as the club's website published. “Now, hopefully for the next one, we can use Wes for some minutes.”
The Italian coach had already highlighted how much the squad values Fofana’s return, telling broadcasters before kick-off: “We are very happy first of all for Wes because after a long time he deserved to be back with us.”
While Fofana edges closer to action, Maresca also revealed that Tosin Adarabioyo will need time to recover from a fitness issue. The summer signing, who featured prominently in pre-season and was part of Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph, was absent from the squad against Palace.
“Tosin had a physical problem. We don’t know for how long,” Maresca admitted. He later added that: “There is a small injury, he needs some days off, then we will see for the next game.”
The twin updates offer a mixed outlook for Chelsea. On one hand, the sight of Fofana back in the fold will raise optimism, but Tosin’s setback is an early blow for a player who had impressed since arriving at the club.
For Maresca, the priority is ensuring both defenders are handled carefully, with the season still in its infancy. The manager’s measured approach suggests the Blues will avoid taking risks, even as they look to build momentum in the Premier League.
