This summer will be one of great interest for both clubs representing AC Milan and Inter Milan. Both clubs have been struggling to get anywhere close to the level in which Juventus operates in Italy and now on the European stage.

Italian football has been rebuilding a reputation over the past three to five seasons and this summer could make the 2017/18 season one of the most competitive in the Serie A for many a year. AC Milan themselves are in a fantastic position financially after the full sale of the club to Chinese group Sino-Europe with the estimated sale of the club around the £630m range, this brings an end to the reign of owner Silvio Berlusconi who achieved so much success during his thirty one years with the Rossoneri.

When you look at the players who graced the famous Red and Black colours during his leadership it is a great credit to the work and commitment Berlusconi gave to the famous San Siro club.

Yonghong Li is the man now that fronts the consortium that bought the club and it looks like the owner has wasted little time in showing off his power in riches. Across the city Inter Milan has made yet another managerial change after the change of power at the top during the summer of 2016.

Former Roma manager Luciano Spalletti has taken over the task of making the Nerazzurri a force on the European stage again. The tactician is the most experienced manager working at the top of the Serie A currently and despite the demands of the Suning Holdings group that took over the club last summer the appointment has gave the club and the fans fresh optimism for the upcoming 2017/18 campaign.

Ac Milan has wasted no time in terms of investing some of their new riches in helping develop the squad. With the emergence of young talent such as Manuel Locatelli, Alessio Romagnoli, Davide Calabria and Gianluigi Donnarumma the club look to be in a healthy position in terms of on the pitch, the question marks might just come with current manager Vincenzo Montella and whether he can live up to the expectations of the new Chinese owners. Almost certainly the new owners will be looking for the Rossoneri to be qualifying for the Champions League.

With Juventus, Napoli, Roma, Inter Milan and always potentially Lazio qualification for the elite competition in Europe will be even tougher.

The good news for Ac Milan is the early transfer business looks highly encouraging; the signing of André Silva from FC Porto is a sign of intent. The twenty one year old is highly regarded across Europe and to be able to draw him to the San Siro ahead of other leading clubs in Europe is a much added bonus. His arrival could spark a bidding war for current frontman Carlos Bacca who despite his impressive goal-scoring figures has never looked happy at the San Siro.

Ricardo Rodríguez for a reported 15m fee is perhaps one of the biggest transfer bargains across the whole of Europe this summer. With the inflated prices of players in every league, to sign potentially one of the best left full backs in the world right now for under 20 million is great business from the Rossoneri who would have had to really act quickly with this deal as interest would have intensified to signing the Swiss international.

Central defender Mateo Musacchio has also arrived at the San Siro following his time at Spanish club Villarreal. The fee is again reported around the 15m mark and should again be regarded as a bargain price for a full Argentina international.

Musacchio has found himself linked with a move to England over the last few summers, so for Ac Milan to get this deal over the line should be regarded as great business for the club. If Montella keeps his tow man defence partnership the next Serie A campaign and Musacchio stays free of injuries, a partnership of Musacchio and Romagnoli would be a very strong base to build the team around.

The two year loan deal of Atalanta’s star midfielder Franck Kessiéseems a complicated deal but could perhaps be the best business the club do this summer. Kessié has been highly sought after during the previous Serie A campaign where he starred for Atalanta and found himself subject of interest for clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and PSG who all identified the Ivory Coast international as a potentially target for their respective clubs.

With the future of number one goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma taking all the headlines at the Milan club currently the club would need to act quickly to get a replacement. Alessandro Plizzari who is the current Italy under20 number one could be elevated into the number one status however a transfer does look the most probable outcome should Donnarumma leave this summer.

Mattia Perinthe Genoa number one looks the most likely target to join the Rossoneri; there is talk that an initial approach has already been made so Milan may be acting quickly to losing their star goalkeeper. Udinese’s number one Alex Meret, forgotten Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart and Wojciech Szczesny could also find themselves linked with the club over the coming weeks. The new owners at Ac Milan will be looking to make that big marquee signing, testing the water for Torino star Andrea Belotti might just be the biggest signing the club could make this summer.

The in-demand Italian international is a proven goal-scorer in Italy so this could be a move that could come before the close of the transfer window. However a smart move for the Rossoneri could be France international and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud. The striker is a player that divides opinion but his goal-scoring record is actually impressive and would add another dimension to the Ac Milan attack.

Adding a creative spark into the current team should be the main focus for the board and Montella, and with the riches at their disposal the club will be linked with a number of high profile names, Felipe Anderson of Lazio should be the man the club pursue. The Brazilian is twenty four and could be the man that really lifts this Ac Milan team closer to the top where Juventus have such a strong grip. Lazio would ask for a very handsome fee for their top creative talent however looking at this current Milan team a move for such a quality player in the final third would be high on the agenda.

Inter Milan are not in such a strong position financially as the rivals, the Suning Holdings group have reportedly said the club will sell first before they but which has added the complications to the job for new manager Spalletti.

Ivan Perisic looks highly likely to leave the club and with the quality of player within the Nerazzurri selling players on will not be a problem. Midfielders Kondogbia, Banega and Brozovic have all been linked with moves, as has central defender Murillo and right midfielder/right wing back Andrea Candreva. Reducing the squad size will be vital for Spaletti as the number of players within the squad would be too many so adding maybe two or three real quality players will be the new managers’ main objective.

Radja Nainggolan would be a quality addition for the Nerazzurri this summer and with his previous connections to the player Spalletti could really get the edge in bringing the Belgian international to the San Siro. The club has been linked with such names as Marco Verratti, James Rodriguez and Bernardeschi; however such names might not be financially practical for the club.

Matteo Darmian is a player who could potentially leave Old Trafford this summer and would add much needed quality and experience to that Inter Milan backline.

The team needs guidance and under Spalletti the club knows there isn’t too much needed to compete at the top with clubs like Juventus and Roma.

Spalletti is a manager who can identify players for roles and almost rebuild reputations; Edin Dzeko and Mo Salah are great examples of this so a move for out of favour Manchester City man Samir Nasri would be fantastic business from Inter.

There might not be a flood of incomings at the blue and black side of Milan this summer but who they do bring in will be massively important for the short term success of this team and to give the highly respected manager a real chance to get this club back to where it belongs competing amongst Europe’s best sides.
