Alan Shearer hails Marcus Rashford as he asserts lack of 'killer instinct'.

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

Marcus Rashford is happy and in top form at Manchester United but he is still not going to be the no.9 that will take the Red Devils to the next level, according to former England striker Alan Shearer.

Rashford picked up from where he left off before the break and led United to an enthralling 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, however, Shearer says the 20-time champions must recruit a new 'number nine' to continue to bring out the best in the 25-year-old.

Rashford broke the deadlock in the match against Forest and then set up Anthony Martial to score the second in the first half.

Martial led Erik ten Hag's side up front, while Rashford was deployed on the left win, giving his the opportunity to terrorise the Forest defenders with his pace.

"I think Marcus enjoys it more, he looks better certainly, in the position we saw tonight," Shearer said on Amazon Prime as BBC Sport quoted.

"He's been given a little bit of freedom - if he wants to go down the middle at times, he can.

"But when he's got all that space to run into from out wide, he's a better player in doing that and he's very, very good at doing that.

"In terms of him being a centre-forward, he lacks that killer instinct, that natural ability to think 'yeah, I'm going to get in there, I'm going to get the two or three yarders'.

"But there's no doubting his ability, he's a fantastic player."

Shearer's former international teammate now working as a pundit Michael Owen added: "I do feel that Rashford is better on the left, he will contribute a decent number of goals each year.

"But he's not going to be the Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Robin van Persie, the Wayne Rooney who scores 30-plus goals a season.

"Obviously he is a huge asset to this football club, gives them something different, gives them pace, gives them directness," the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward concluded.
