Arteta Boosts Arsenal's Coaching Staff With Gabriel Heinze

Updated: Jul 11

Former Red Devil Reunites With Arteta As Gunners Strengthen Backroom Team

Arsenal have added a familiar face with serious pedigree to their coaching staff, as Gabriel Heinze joins Mikel Arteta’s backroom setup at the Emirates.

The former Argentina international steps into the role vacated by Carlos Cuesta, who recently took the reins at Parma.

Reuniting On New Turf

Heinze may be best known to Premier League fans for his no-nonsense defending at Manchester United in the mid-2000s. Yes, a direct rival, but Gunners supporters might warm up to the idea when they learn about his longstanding connection with Arteta.

The two played together at Paris Saint-Germain during the 2001–02 season, back when Arteta was just beginning to carve out his career in top-flight football. More than two decades later, they’re joining forces again, only this time on the touchline.

Arteta has been intentional about building a backroom team.

Proven Grit And Global Know-How

Heinze’s CV as a player includes stints at heavyweights like Real Madrid, Marseille, and Roma, alongside 72 international appearances for Argentina. Notably, he was part of the United squad that lifted the Premier League title in 2006–07.

Since hanging up his boots, he's held head coaching roles across five different clubs, including Atlanta United and Newell’s Old Boys. It’s that blend of high-level playing experience and global coaching exposure that makes Heinze a fascinating addition to the Arsenal bench.

A Move That’s Been Brewing

The Gunners have had their eye on Heinze for a while. Reports suggest the club closely monitored him when Cuesta was being linked with a move to Norwich City last year, a sign that this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment hire.

Now, with Cuesta officially out, the opportunity aligned. Arteta has been intentional about building a backroom team that reflects both tactical intelligence and on-the-ground experience. Heinze ticks both boxes.

Eyes On The Prize

With Arsenal finishing second in the Premier League for three straight seasons, it’s no secret that Arteta is looking for every edge possible to finally push his side over the line. Heinze’s arrival adds a fresh voice, a defensive mindset, and a competitive edge that could prove invaluable in high-pressure title moments.

The appointment also comes during a whirlwind summer at the Emirates. The Gunners have already welcomed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea and Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, while deals for Christian Nørgaard and Viktor Gyökeres are reportedly close.

Arteta’s message is clear: Arsenal are gearing up for another serious push, and with Heinze by his side, the Gunners are loading up on experience as well as talent.
