Reece James insists securing trophies is the main goal for Chelsea
Chelsea captain Reece James has made it clear that the bar for this season is set high, and silverware is the target.
Speaking after the Blues wrapped up pre-season with a commanding 4-1 victory over AC Milan at Stamford Bridge, James reflected on the renewed sense of purpose running through the squad.
Two wins in three days during the VisitMalta Weekender had already lifted spirits, and with new signings making an instant impact, the mood around the Stamford Bridge club is buoyant.
“It feels like we’re in a strong position,” James told Chelsea’s official website. “We finished last season with two trophies, and there’s a great atmosphere at the club right now. The last couple of years have been challenging, but we’ve come a long way.”
The England international was full of praise for the club’s summer arrivals, including Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, both of whom found the net against Milan. “They’re great additions to the team and have settled in really well,” he added.
But James’ sights are firmly fixed on the bigger picture. “We are Chelsea Football Club — we’re meant to be competing near the top of the Premier League, fighting for titles. This season we’ll do everything we can to get our hands on trophies and go up against the very best.”
The first test comes quickly, with Crystal Palace visiting Stamford Bridge for the Premier League opener. For James, it’s more than an early-season fixture, it’s the first step in a campaign he hopes will end with Chelsea back among football’s elite, with medals to prove it.
