Jeremie Frimpong’s Liverpool story is just beginning, but he’s already making it feel like home. Signed in the wake of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s high-profile move to Real Madrid, Frimpong arrives with expectations and curiosity in equal measure.
But just a few weeks into pre-season, the Dutchman is settling in fast, on the pitch, in the dressing room, and under the spotlight.
Frimpong made his second-half debut in Liverpool’s 4-2 friendly defeat to AC Milan at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, a match watched by nearly 50,000 fans. While the result wasn’t what the Reds wanted, the atmosphere and intensity were something else entirely.
“Of course,” Frimpong told Liverpoolfc.com when asked if the loss stung. “Even though it’s pre-season, no-one likes to lose. But pre-season is to get fit. We’re getting there and we’re getting fit.”
Despite the loss, Frimpong showed flashes of his dynamic style, marauding down the right flank, combining with teammates, and pressing high in Arne Slot’s system. Deployed in a more attacking role than some might expect from a full-back, Frimpong wasn’t fazed.
“For me, anywhere I play, I play the same,” he said. “I’m an attacking full-back, so if I play right wing, right-back, right wing-back, I play the same anyway. So, wherever the manager wants to play me, that’s where I play.”
That kind of attitude, open, adaptable, team-first, is precisely what makes the 24-year-old such a compelling addition. And behind the scenes, things seem to be gelling just as well.
“I knew a few of the boys, so obviously it made it easier for me,” he said. “All the boys are great, we all get along, so it makes it easier for all of us.”
With Liverpool now headed for Japan to face Yokohama F. Marinos, the tour rolls on, but the impact of Hong Kong isn’t lost on Frimpong. Thursday’s open training drew a crowd of 25,000, and Saturday’s record-setting match made history for football in the city.
“Amazing,” he said, beaming. “Obviously, the fans in Hong Kong are really amazing. I didn’t expect this, to be honest. It’s really, really amazing."
And in the middle of this whirlwind, Frimpong’s support system hasn’t gone silent.
“My dad called me yesterday, to be fair,” he added. “He was like, ‘Enjoy every moment.’” Right now, it looks like Frimpong is doing exactly that, enjoying the ride, embracing the red shirt, and already playing like a man who belongs.
