Reds Run Riot in Rain-Soaked Chicago as United Outclass Bournemouth 4-1
On a rain-soaked night in the heart of Chicago, Manchester United looked anything but sluggish, producing a commanding 4-1 win over Bournemouth at Soldier Field.
The victory saw Rúben Amorim’s men maintain a perfect record in the Premier League Summer Series, delivering a performance that blended precision with panache and a healthy dose of Scandinavian flair.
From the opening whistle, United controlled the tempo. Even the swirling Midwest winds and steady downpour couldn’t dampen their rhythm. Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, operating in tandem through the middle, set the early tone with slick interchanges, one of which nearly yielded a goal when Fernandes tested goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic with a firm drive.
But Petrovic wouldn’t stay unbeaten for long. Eight minutes in, United's Danish connection struck gold. Patrick Dorgu, making the left flank his playground, floated in a sublime cross for Rasmus Højlund, who escaped his marker and delicately glanced the ball into the far corner.
Dorgu wasn’t finished. Ten minutes later, he turned scorer. A quick-thinking free-kick by Mount found him barrelling down the wing again, and this time he held off Julian Araujo and tucked the ball past Petrovic with the confidence of a veteran, not a newcomer still finding his feet.
While Bournemouth struggled to deal with United’s front-foot football, they almost found a foothold when Antoine Semenyo thought he’d pulled one back. However, a tight offside call erased his effort. Moments later, Tom Heaton was called into action to deny Dango Ouattara, and with that, United went into the break comfortably ahead.
Amorim’s men weren’t content to sit back. Early in the second half, pressure from Højlund forced a defensive mishap, and Amad Diallo pounced, threading his finish past Petrovic to make it three. Bournemouth rang the changes and came close to responding as David Brooks rattled the bar and Semenyo saw another strike saved, but it was United who remained clinical.
Ethan Williams, barely on the pitch a minute, scored United’s fourth with a smart finish after Amorim had rotated his squad heavily on the hour. The team looked as fluid with the substitutes as it did with the starters, another testament to the balance being built under Amorim’s watch.
The only smudge on an otherwise spotless outing came in the final moments when Brooks’ shot clipped centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and trickled in for an own goal. It did little to change the mood, though, United had already made their mark.
With Everton looming on Sunday, Amorim’s side need only a draw to secure the Summer Series trophy. But more than silverware, it’s the chemistry, tactical sharpness, and confidence that will most please the Portuguese manager.
At Soldier Field, United didn’t simply win, they sent a message. The structure is holding, the stars are performing, and the supporting cast is stepping up. Pre-season or not, something promising is clearly taking shape.
