Manchester United Sign Paraguayan Left-Back Diego Leon From Cerro Porteño

Updated: Jul 8

Manchester United have just added another promising talent to their squad with the signing of 18-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteño. The deal, reportedly worth up to £7 million, marks the club’s second summer signing after the blockbuster arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million last month.

Leon, a product of Cerro Porteño’s youth system, made his senior debut last August and has already impressed with four goals in 33 appearances. Despite his young age, the teenager is confident about making an immediate impact at Old Trafford, boldly stating he expects to settle into the first team within just a couple of games.

The Red Devils fought off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City to secure the defender, who is seen as a vital addition to cover the anticipated exit of Tyrell Malacia. With Malacia and four other players currently sidelined from pre-season training as they explore moves away from the club, Leon’s arrival couldn’t be timelier.

While manager Ruben Amorim will assess Leon’s readiness during pre-season before deciding whether to keep him in the first team or send him out on loan, the player himself is determined to avoid the loan route. “Everyone thinks I’ll go out on loan, but I don’t have that mindset. I’m going to kill it in pre-season,” Leon insisted.

As United aim to nurture young talent and strengthen their future options, Leon’s signing adds promising potential to their squad. Meanwhile, the club is closing in on further reinforcements, with talks progressing over Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, the 25-year-old winger valued for his Premier League experience and age profile.

For now, all eyes will be on Leon as he prepares to take his first steps in English football, hoping to make his mark at one of the world’s most iconic clubs.
