Enzo Maresca Heaps Praise on Josh Acheampong and Estevao Willian
Enzo Maresca couldn’t help but express his admiration for Chelsea’s young stars following the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.
The Premier League opener highlighted the emergence of two exciting teenagers, Josh Acheampong and Estevao Willian, who played key roles in maintaining Chelsea’s defensive stability and injecting energy into the attack.
With several first-team defenders sidelined due to injuries, Maresca turned to his academy graduate, 19-year-old Josh Acheampong, to anchor the backline. Tasked with handling the imposing Jean-Philippe Mateta, Acheampong displayed remarkable composure and tactical awareness. “Josh was very good.
“We showed our confidence in Josh last year as he played some games for us. Today he did very well, he dealt with Mateta very well, so overall he had a good game,” Maresca said, highlighting the young defender’s ability to handle pressure while contributing to the team’s build-up play.
Meanwhile, Estevao Willian made his Premier League debut after coming on midway through the second half. The 18-year-old Brazilian immediately made his presence felt, taking on defenders and delivering dangerous crosses from the right flank.
Despite narrowly missing a goal, his fearless approach and flair impressed fans and the coaching staff. Maresca praised the newcomer, saying: “Estevao was very good.
“He showed personality, and he is already showing that in our training sessions and for no doubt – slowly, slowly – he will become a very important player for this club.”
The Chelsea manager’s commendations underscore a strategic focus on integrating youth into the first-team squad, fostering both confidence and responsibility.
Acheampong and Estevao’s performances provide a glimpse into a promising future, suggesting that the club’s next generation is ready to contribute meaningfully at the highest level.
