Wayne Rooney tips Liverpool to become “unstoppable” if Alexander Isak joins before the transfer deadline, warning rivals of a potential title surge.
Wayne Rooney has seen plenty of title-winning sides in his time, but the former Manchester United forward believes Liverpool could reach an entirely different gear if they pull off one more blockbuster signing before the window closes.
Speaking about Alexander Isak’s potential switch from Newcastle to Anfield, Rooney didn’t mince his words. “Good players fit in,” he told BBC Sport. With Isak, he has shown what a top player he is, and I already have Liverpool as favourites to win the title this year, but if he comes in, then I think they are going to be unstoppable.”
Isak’s name has dominated the summer chatter. The 25-year-old Swede, fresh from a stunning 27-goal campaign, is reportedly determined to swap St James’ Park for the red of Liverpool.
While Newcastle rejected a £110m bid earlier this month, it hasn’t cooled the speculation – or the player’s desire to leave. He’s been kept out of Eddie Howe’s plans entirely, missing the pre-season tour and training alone in Spain before returning to England.
For Newcastle, losing their star striker would be more than a transfer blow – it would ripple through the dressing room and perhaps the wider perception of the club’s project. Rooney sympathised with the Magpies’ position, saying, “It is a huge blow to Newcastle.
“Over the last few years, they have done everything right… but for Isak to leave, if that happens, it would be a massive setback. If the best players are leaving, players will look at that and think, ‘Is that somewhere I want to go?’”
Liverpool, meanwhile, appear ready to pounce. Already strengthening at the back with their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, adding Isak to an attack featuring Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and Cody Gakpo would send a clear message that they intend to dominate on all fronts.
Rooney even managed to fit in a quick word about his old club’s prospects. “I think Man Utd need one or two more signings, but I see what Amorim is doing… I think they will sneak into the top five. I hope they do!”
For now, all eyes remain on Isak’s future. If Liverpool secure his signature, Rooney’s warning to the rest of the league may prove prophetic because the idea of the Premier League champions adding one of Europe’s deadliest forwards is the kind of scenario that keeps rival managers awake at night.
