Arne Slot Hopes Ryan Gravenberch’s Return Will Bolster Liverpool’s Defensive Stability
Liverpool boss Arne Slot is banking on the return of Ryan Gravenberch to restore much-needed balance to his midfield and, in turn, add a crucial protective layer to the Reds’ back four.
The Dutch midfielder missed the opening-day clash with Bournemouth through suspension, leaving Slot to reshuffle his options in the centre of the park.
While Liverpool secured the points against the Cherries, the manager admitted the absence of Gravenberch was felt most when it came to shielding Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté during defensive transitions.
Slot didn’t hide his admiration for what the 22-year-old brings to the team, particularly in moments when Liverpool are exposed on the counter. “I think a lot. At least if he is the same player as he was last season, that could help us a lot,” he explained when asked about Gravenberch’s importance.
Reflecting on Bournemouth’s second goal, Slot added as Liverpoolfc.com quoted: “They could go from one side of the box to the other without being attacked. Ryan would have been in that position, and without him, we lacked someone there. Normally, if he brings his normal level, it will definitely help us to have him back again.”
Gravenberch quickly established himself as a stabilising influence last season, thriving in a role that allowed Liverpool’s more attack-minded players to flourish.
His awareness, positioning, and ability to break up play offer a security blanket that gives freedom to the Reds' marauding full-backs, whose attacking instincts have left the team more vulnerable down the flanks in the early weeks of this campaign.
The Dutch international’s return, in time for a trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Monday, is seen as a significant boost for a side that has appeared more open than usual.
Slot is well aware of the balancing act he faces in integrating creative forces such as Florian Wirtz in advanced roles while ensuring his team retains the defensive solidity that underpinned last season’s success.
Beyond his tactical influence, Gravenberch’s presence brings composure in possession and a physical edge that Liverpool were missing against Bournemouth. His ability to slow down opposition counters could prove vital as Slot looks to recalibrate his side after a summer of change.
For Slot, the formula is clear - with Gravenberch anchoring the midfield, Liverpool’s defensive line will once again have the cover it needs to thrive.
