Super Cup loss won’t hold Spurs back, Thomas Frank insists ahead of Burnley clash
Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank remains upbeat despite a heart-stopping defeat to Paris St-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Spurs had a two-goal cushion deep into the match, but PSG’s late surge forced penalties, where the European champions ultimately prevailed.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Frank highlighted the positives in an otherwise gut-wrenching evening. “I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time.
“We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit.”
He praised the team’s tactical discipline, particularly in balancing high pressure and low defensive blocks, as well as their threat from set pieces.
Despite the loss, Frank emphasised the club’s progress and the resilience of his squad. He acknowledged the natural disappointment following such a narrow defeat but reassured fans that the team would respond quickly.
“It is a short turnaround, there will be disappointment in the next 24 hours, and when I wake up tomorrow, but tomorrow afternoon we will be ready, and Friday we will be more ready. And we will make sure we come flying out on Saturday,” he confirmed, looking ahead to the Premier League opener against Burnley.
Transfer business is also on Frank’s mind as he seeks to bolster the squad. “We’d like to strengthen the squad. No doubt about that. We do work very hard to see if we can do that. In general, I am very happy with the squad, but in any transfer window we try to see if we can make the squad stronger before the window closes,” he added.
For Spurs, the defeat is a bitter pill, but Frank’s message is clear, and that is learning from the experience and hitting the ground running against newly promoted Burnley will be paramount.
The focus now turns swiftly to the Premier League, where Frank expects his players to channel their energy and start the 2025-26 season with purpose.
