Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham has delivered a stinging critique of Erik ten Hag, claiming the Dutch manager won’t survive the season at Old Trafford.
Sheringham, who was part of United’s famous treble-winning team in 1999, believes the writing is on the wall for Ten Hag and that the club will be forced to make a change by Christmas.
Ten Hag took charge of United in 2022 with high hopes but has struggled to bring the Red Devils back to the top of English football. Last season's disappointing eighth-place finish left the team out of the Champions League, despite a glimmer of success with their FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City. Sheringham, however, remains unconvinced.
“When you’re finishing eighth at Man United, it’s simply not good enough. There’s no other way to look at it,” Sheringham told Ladbrokes. “You see the same inconsistency this season as last—there’s no change in how Ten Hag wants to play. For me, it’s clear he shouldn’t be there."
After investing £180 million in summer signings, fans had hoped for a resurgence this season. However, early losses to Brighton and Liverpool have reignited frustration. United’s 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool was a bitter pill to swallow, with Luis Diaz scoring twice and Mo Salah putting the match beyond doubt.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford turned sour, with boos echoing around the stadium, particularly when Alejandro Garnacho was substituted in the second half. Sheringham didn’t mince words in his assessment: "I don't want to see anyone lose their job, but I think Ten Hag will be gone by Christmas. It’s just not working."
United’s rocky start has left them languishing in 14th place, with only one win from their opening three games. While fans are eagerly awaiting the debut of new £50.5 million signing Manuel Ugarte, who was paraded before the Liverpool match, Sheringham believes time is running out for Ten Hag to prove he’s the man for the job.
As Manchester United head into the international break, Ten Hag faces mounting pressure. Sheringham along with a growing number of fans, are losing faith that the current boss can turn things around before it’s too late. For Ten Hag, the next few months could be make or break.
