Arne Slot Keeps Focus on Newcastle Test Despite Alexander Isak Transfer Turmoil
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has urged focus ahead of Monday night’s trip to St. James’ Park, even as Newcastle United remain embroiled in the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer storm.
With headlines dominated by the Swedish striker’s explosive statement and uncertainty about his future, Slot made a conscious effort to shift the spotlight back to the football itself.
The Reds manager, speaking in his pre-match press conference, made it clear he expects Newcastle to pose a formidable challenge regardless of the noise surrounding their talisman.
“I think if you go to Newcastle, you know what to expect,” Slot explained. “We played them three times last season, and twice their intensity levels were above ours. In the away game, especially in the first 60 minutes, they were so, so, so intense and fully deserved to have the lead. In the League Cup final, they were more intense than us as well.”
While Isak’s camp has claimed “promises were broken and trust is lost,” the Dutch coach wasn’t drawn into the saga. Instead, he emphasised that the Magpies’ quality is deeper than any single individual.
“Apart from the intensity, it’s a very good team. They have players that can fight but also those who are so comfortable on the ball. One of the best teams in the league and one of the most difficult away games you can have in the season, especially as you say here, ‘under the lights’.”
Reports suggest Isak won't feature, but Slot insisted that Eddie Howe’s side remain loaded with attacking weapons. “I assume – I’m not sure, but I assume – Isak is not playing from what I read in the media.
“But they still have Anthony Gordon as a nine, they still have Elanga on the right and Barnes from the left. And then Jacob Murphy isn’t even playing, who was very good against us twice last season. This is the Premier League, we all have a lot of options and Newcastle have them as well.”
Slot, who has guided Liverpool into the new campaign with ambitions of retaining the Premier League crown, also highlighted the role of the atmosphere at St. James’ Park.
But once again, he downplayed the off-field drama. “I don’t think they are a club with troubles. They had a very good start to the season against Villa… it’s mainly difficult because of the players they have there – not only because of the fans, but the atmosphere is great, like it is at Anfield.”
The Dutchman’s remarks are an attempt to keep the build-up grounded in footballing terms rather than letting the Isak saga overshadow preparation.
However, Liverpool know from experience that the intensity at St. James’ Park, particularly under the floodlights, can overwhelm even the best. With the Isak saga leaving home fans furious, Slot expects a cauldron of noise and a Newcastle side ready to turn the night into chaos.
