Brennan Johnson Tips Fired-Up Richarlison to Shine for Tottenham

Brennan Johnson has thrown his support behind teammate Richarlison, believing the Brazilian striker is primed for a big campaign with Tottenham after a flying start to the new season.

The Welsh forward, who also found the net in Spurs’ 3-0 opening-day win over Burnley, highlighted Richarlison’s motivation and work ethic as the key ingredients behind his blistering early form.

Johnson pointed to the focus and determination Richarlison has shown since returning to training in July as evidence that the number nine is ready to lead from the front.

“This is my third season with him,” Johnson explained, reflecting on the bond they have developed, as Spurs' official website reported. “When Richy plays well, it’s almost games that you remember. He’s had his share of injuries, but from day one this summer, he’s come back so motivated.

“You can see it in his eyes, the hunger, working hard. I think it showed today [against Burnley], how hard he works, first and foremost, and then his quality.”

Richarlison’s brace against Burnley underlined that point. His first finish came from a difficult spinning ball, taken with composure, while his second was a stunning scissor kick after a sweeping team move involving every Spurs player, with some fans already calling it one of the goals of the season.

Johnson, who was also on the scoresheet, was quick to credit Richarlison’s skill in the build-up to his own strike. “For example, my goal, the touch where he flicks the ball over someone’s head and then sets it off to Pape… he also scored an unbelievable goal. His first goal as well is not easy at all, the ball is spinning, horrible height, he just tucks it away.”

The 27-year-old striker has often been criticised for inconsistency, but Johnson is convinced that this time things could be different. With a full pre-season under his belt, a renewed sharpness, and a manager willing to build a system around him, Richarlison’s potential to be Spurs’ talisman is clear.

“Hopefully, with his quality and these performances, he can keep picking up more rhythm,” Johnson added. “He’s been out for a while, and this is the first game of the season, so hopefully the best is still yet to come.”

If the Brazilian maintains the hunger his teammate describes, Tottenham may finally see the very best of their number nine this season.
