Man United Captain Bruno Fernandes Admits A Few Things They Did Wrong Against Fulham

Bruno Fernandes cut a frustrated figure after Manchester United’s 1–1 draw at Fulham, openly acknowledging the missed opportunities and lapses in control that prevented his side from leaving Craven Cottage with all three points.

The skipper, whose first-half penalty flew over the bar, admitted that the Red Devils lacked the sharpness required to turn their advantage into victory.

“We cannot be satisfied with one point. We came here to win the game,” Fernandes told BBC Match of the Day. “We were defending very well, but in one of them, they got their goal. For us, it is very disappointing to not win the game today.”

His missed penalty inevitably dominated the discussion. Calm and clinical from the spot for much of his career, Fernandes accepted responsibility with rare bluntness.

“I missed the penalty because I kicked the ball very badly,” he said. “As everyone has their own routine. This time I didn’t execute properly.”

The midfielder, however, was more forthright when speaking to Sky Sports, expressing irritation at the incident leading up to his miss.

“I was upset. As a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment, but that’s not the excuse for missing the penalty.”

Beyond his personal setback, Fernandes highlighted collective shortcomings, particularly after United went ahead via Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal.

“We are very disappointed. Obviously, we were into the game. We should have controlled it better after our goal and made them run. We were controlling well the runs into the box from their midfielders,” he reflected.

Even amid frustration, the captain pointed to bright spots, notably the contributions of the club’s summer recruits, especially Cunha and Mbeumo. “They are great players for us. They have great abilities. We will see much more from them. We are very happy to have them in the team.”

United showed effort and organisation, but a lack of precision and composure meant two points slipped away.

Fernandes' willingness to accept blame for the penalty and his broader assessment of the team’s flaws underline the urgency he feels, as he insists the Red Devils must demand more of themselves.
