Amorim’s Man United Held to 1–1 Draw at Fulham Amid Ongoing Goal Struggles
Manchester United’s search for attacking fluency under Rúben Amorim remains unfinished business, as they stumbled to a 1–1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Despite long stretches of control and a golden opportunity from the penalty spot, United’s lack of cutting edge once again cost them their first win of the campaign.
The game appeared to be tilting in their favour midway through the second half. Bruno Fernandes, who had earlier spurned a chance to give his side the lead from twelve yards, saw Leny Yoro’s header deflect cruelly off Rodrigo Muniz and into the Fulham net.
Relief spread across the visiting ranks, the breakthrough at last arriving after 58 minutes of frustration. Yet United could not kill the contest. Fulham, who had been battling to end a miserable run of defeats to the Red Devils on their own patch, summoned a response from the bench.
Emile Smith Rowe, introduced to add guile and energy, drifted into the box and applied the finishing touch to an Alex Iwobi cross that Diogo Dalot failed to clear. In the 73rd minute, parity was restored, and belief surged back into the home crowd.
The equaliser sharpened the focus on Fernandes’ earlier miss. The Portuguese midfielder had looked typically assured before Calvin Bassey’s clumsy foul on Mason Mount handed United a spot-kick.
But after an awkward collision with referee Chris Kavanagh in the moments leading up to his strike, Fernandes skied his effort into the stands. It was his first penalty failure in over half a year, and it came at a costly moment.
United’s inability to find a second wind meant Fulham secured a morale-boosting point, ending an eight-game losing streak at home to their visitors. For Amorim, however, the narrative was more troubling: plenty of industry, flashes of invention, but still too few goals.
The uncertainty around United’s goalkeeping situation added another subplot. Altay Bayındır kept his place ahead of Andre Onana, and his afternoon reflected both promise and fragility.
A 70-yard pass launched one of United’s best attacking moments, yet indecision from corners again exposed a vulnerability that opponents are beginning to target. He was sharp when denying Josh King with a brave block but less convincing when parrying Iwobi’s drive around the post.
As the final whistle blew, United were left with more questions than answers. Amorim’s side look organised and energetic compared to last season, but without sharper finishing, they remain a team searching for the ruthlessness required to turn performances into victories.
At Craven Cottage, the familiar problem of goalscoring wastefulness ensured that the spoils were shared.
