Spurs Boss Ange Postecoglou Pleased His Side Had a 'Strong Mindset' Against Everton
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team’s mental strength following their dominant 4-0 victory over Everton, which marked their first Premier League win of the 2024-25 season.
Goals from Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero, along with a brace from Son Heung-min, helped the North London club make up for Monday's 1-1 draw against Leicester City. However, Postecoglou had nothing but praise for his Lilywhites' focus and relentless attitude, which led to a convincing performance at home.
“Football was good, and we played well,” Postecoglou told BC Radio 5 Live. “We played well last week and we dominated the game. Today was a bit different. The lads had a strong mindset, and we got a really good goal early on and we didn’t let off after that.”
The Spurs boss was particularly impressed with his defensive lineup, especially Micky van de Ven, who showcased his athleticism and defensive prowess. “There aren’t many centre-halves like Micky; he is a great athlete,” Postecoglou noted. “Last year, when we had our back four fit, it made a big difference to us.”
With a demanding season ahead, Postecoglou acknowledged the need to manage his players’ workloads carefully, especially with international breaks and midweek games. “We have to share the workload. At the moment, we don’t have midweek games. In the international break, we have to manage him [Van de Ven], Romero, and Destiny Udogie as they have had an interrupted pre-season,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Postecoglou expressed his optimistic outlook for the season, despite the challenges that come with competing at the top level. “I always have hope, and I am optimistic at heart.
You need to be in our game because there is plenty that can bring you down,” he said. “Last week’s performance was really good, but when you don’t get the result, there is always a bit of doubt there.”
Postecoglou also touched on midfielder Yves Bissouma, who scored in the win against Everton. Bissouma had been in the spotlight recently after being forced to apologize for a controversial video that surfaced, showing him inhaling laughing gas.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Postecoglou said: “It's a good start. He's still got work to do. I'm not doubting his footballing quality. We want to make him the best version of himself. That starts off the field as much as on it.”
